Breathing life into big data and animated by children’s imagination, Aria is an ethereal encounter of vocal performances, dance and immersive light installations in a night-time conservatory. Responsive to the COVID-19 pandemic and a new vision for what international productions may become, the pathbreaking promenade experience unites the Grammy and Pulitzer Prize-winning Theatre of Voices, appearing via hologram, the Hong Kong Children’s Choir and cross-disciplinary artists in a song of air beyond the Anthropocene.
Aria premiered as a site-specific performance at Hong Kong Park's Forsgate Conservatory in 2020. The project began as an initiative of the Hong Kong Baptist University's Interdisciplinary Research Laboratory, and was a programme under ReNew Vision with support from the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, Hong Kong SAR Government.

in the Key of Air
Artistic imagination transforms the Forsgate Conservatory into a multipart set for the promenade performance. In this refreshing urban sanctuary, which evokes the greenhouse effect and biospheres as our potential future realities, the audience meander through a forest of “night’s magical exchange,” a desertifying Anthropocene suffering from “pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis”, and a void of disappearance.
Their guides are wafty dancers. In each scene, this ethereal song reverberates in whispers and gasps of the Hong Kong Children’s Choir, who share the same stage with the Theatre of Voices, appearing in holograms. In the final scene, the vocalists chant “the grey of Victoria Harbour” in a gush of fog, dissipating in front of the incessantly lit skyscrapers. There, air takes its time to urge the audience for a pause—to listen to, see and feel air in our immediate present.
From university research to a programme under ReNew Vision, Aria crosses silos and brings into fruition a visionary collaboration across disciplines, media and geographical regions, against the odds of a challenging pandemic.
Blending big data and children's imagination, this song of air amplifies the impact of air quality on humans' breathing, expression and survival with the voice as a most immediate instrument.
Greenhouses are urban oases. They are also historically loaded. Set at Hong Kong Park's Forsgate Conservatory in the midst of a concrete jungle, what does this dialogue between art and conservation inspire?
The pandemic has ushered in a "new normal," and this new normal might as well be the future reimagined. "Resilience" is a keyword for the realisation of Aria, and care for the environment and collaborators is key.
